Monday turned out to have one of the craziest trades in the history of the NFL when the Las Vegas Raiders sent quarterback Geno Smith to the New York Jets. The same exact Jets organization that drafted Smith in the second round of the 2013 draft. Talk about coming full circle in your life and career.
At first, I thought this news was a joke. Then had to look at the calendar to make sure I didn't sleep through March, and it was already April Fool's Day. Nope, the trade really happened and was finalized when the league offices opened for the 2026 season on Wednesday.
The Jets got their former future quarterback back at a discount also since the Raiders were desperate to move Smith since he just signed a $75 million three-year deal just a season ago. The Raiders will pay the bulk of Smith's 2026 salary while the Jets will only be on the hook for a veteran minimum of $1.3 million.
Smith has been on the move throughout his NFL career playing with the Jets, New York Giants, Las Angeles Chargers, Seattle Seahawks, the Raiders and now back to the Jets. Things looked like they were turning around for Smith when the Seahawks picked him up and had even played his way into the playoffs during the 2022 season.
Smith seemed to be poised to be the future of the Raiders but that fizzled out just like everything Raiders does. It was head coach Pete Carroll that was all about the Raiders signing Smith in the first place since they were together in Seattle.
Smith will be remembered more for the time he spent in college at West Virginia than he will for his time in the NFL. The only thing Smith will be remembered for in the NFL is the guy that replaced Russell Wilson in Seattle. That's about it.
